Bradford Owls Friday recap: Eakin claims 6th-place medal at states
SHIPPENSBURG –– Bradford High’s John Eakin and four other coverage area athletes medaled in their respective events during the first day of the PIAA track and field championships Friday at Shippensburg University.
Eakin threw the shot put 55-04.50 to place sixth in the event. The top eight finishers in each event receive medals.
Three others in the area medaled in the Class AA javelin, led by Johnsonburg’s Skylar Sherry (second), who tossed the javelin 144-00, 4-08 off the first-place finisher’s top throw. District 9, which qualified four girls in the event, took four of the top 10 spots.
One of those four finishers was Kane High’s Trinity Clark (seventh), who finished with a throw of 130-06. Moniteau’s Cambrie Campbell (third) and North Clarion’s Tori Obenrader (10th) were the other top finishers from D-9.
Kane throws coach Rae El Whitman went two-for-two with state medalists, as Austin Labesky took home a sixth-place medal in the event after the Slippery Rock-bound senior recorded a throw of 175-06.
Rounding out the area medalists was St. Marys’ Tom Bojalad, who finished second in the Class AA shot put. Coudersport’s Adrian Page narrowly missed out on a state medal, finishing ninth in the girls discus.
On the track, Otto-Eldred’s Tiffany Bair (100 dash) and Kane’s Joe Newton (110 hurdles) each qualified for this morning’s semifinals. The top eight finishers in each event move on to the finals, scheduled to be held this afternoon.
Elk Catholic’s boys and girls 3,200 relay teams qualified for the finals this morning, while Lady Crusader Lauryn Wortman qualified for the 800 finals.
