In order to start your summer off right, here are some things you need to know for Memorial Day weekend

With summer just around the corner, many regard Memorial Day weekend as the kickoff. This three-day weekend is not only important due to the fact that we are celebrating those who died while serving our country, but also because it means that warm days and sunny skies are upon us, well, hopefully.

This weekend begins the start of cookouts and campfires, but for some, they may be looking to head out of the backyard.

The Bradford area town-wide garage sales will begin at 8 a.m. and continue until 2 p.m., this Saturday, May 27. The garage sales are popular for the area, and draw in those who are looking for good bargains.

For those looking to frolic in the park, Hanley Park is also open after construction and renovations. After being closed last year for maintenance, kids can now enjoy new equipment, and a new play area for younger, as well as older, kids.

As weather gets warmer, many start to think about all things outdoors, and Willow Bay may be your ticket. Willow Bay offers a scenic trail, as well as camping sites and cabins to accommodate a stay. There are also boat rentals available as well as spots for fishing for those who want to spend time out on the water.

There is also hiking, fishing or canoeing at Marilla Reservoir, but visitors are asked to remember to take care of the area and carry out trash. Marilla is also located near the Indian Pipe Trail, located right across from the reservoir.

The Indian Pipe Trail is a 7.4-mile, non-motorized trail, which crosses around 4,000 acres of northern hardwood forest.

The trail is open to biking and is filled with flowers of all kinds, including the Indian pipe flower, a rare flower from which the trail got its name. The flower is also known as “American iceplant” or “ghost flower,” and grows only 3-4 inches in height.

Perhaps for the weekend families are traveling out of town, in which case Kane is hosting Flickerfest, a three-day event celebrating the 17th anniversary of the Flickerwood Winery. The event includes new wine, food, artwork from local artists, as well as live music.

The Flickerfest kicks off on Saturday with a pancake breakfast 10 a.m. to noon.

Flickerwood Wine Cellars, known as the “Wine that Rocks,” began on Memorial Day weekend in 2000.

For anyone who wants to get a good run in over the weekend, or just enjoy watching, the Dahoga Dash 5K takes place in Wilcox on Sunday. Registration begins at 9 a.m. For more information on the race contact Randy Lindberg at randylindberg@hotmail.com, or cal (814)965-5482.

In case you have plans for the weekend, it is important to know what the weather will be.

Friday looks mostly cloudy, with a high near 62 and a low around 49. On Saturday, the weather will be mostly cloudy with spotty showers, with a high near 68. The low for saturday is 54. Sunday will be cloudy with a couple showers and thunderstorms with a high near 69. The low is around 58. On Monday, for Memorial Day, the weather will be mostly cloudy with spotty showers. The high for the day is 70 and the low is around 53.

The Memorial Day parade, in honor of our service men and women who have fallen, will be in Bradford on Monday, starting at 10:15 a.m. Monday.
