A Bradford man is facing aggravated assault charges for allegations that he fought with a police officer who tried to arrest him.
Darryl Michael Sherlock, 30, of 137 N. Center St., was arraigned Wednesday before District Judge Dominic Cercone on charges of resisting arrest, a second-degree felony; resisting arrest and flight to avoid apprehension, both second-degree misdemeanors; disorderly conduct, a third-degree misdemeanor; and harassment, a summary charge, court records stated.
According to court records, at 5:05 p.m. April 7, four Bradford City Police officers went to Sherlock’s residence to help Children and Youth Services and to locate Sherlock, who was warranted on a warrant by city police.
Officers split up, with two at the front door with CYS and two at the back door, and they knocked on the front door. Sherlock allegedly ran out the back of the residence and was detained and put in a patrol cruiser.
Then, Patrolman Kolin Strawcutter, who was still at the back of the residence, was warned via radio that Sherlock was running toward him, court records state. Police allegedly chased Sherlock, going south toward Pleasant Street, across Pleasant Street and through neighboring properties.
Sherlock was stopped when Strawcutter tackled him to the ground; Sherlock allegedly continued to try to get away while they were on the ground, refusing to place his hands behind his back. Court records state Sherlock struck Strawcutter in the chest with an open hand and wrapped his arms around Strawcutter’s left leg, trying to hurt him and get away.
Court records indicate that Strawcutter had struck Sherlock with two knee thrusts in defense, when another officer came and threatened to tase Sherlock if he did not stop resisting arrest. At that, Sherlock put his hands behind his head and allowed officers to arrest him.
The criminal complaint did not state what the warrant was for, but an online court docket for a different case indicates that Sherlock was arraigned the evening of April 7 — the same day as the alleged assault on police — for 2016 allegations of marijuana possession and driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
After his arraignment on the newer charges, Sherlock was remanded to McKean County Jail in lieu of $25,000. He is scheduled to appear in Central Court on those charges on May 11.
Meanwhile, in the DUI case, bail had been set at $50,000. A last day to plea conference in the DUI case is scheduled for June 29 in McKean County Court.
