Two people were arrested on drug allegations Friday during a traffic stop in Kane Borough.
Karissa Alexandria Burt, 21, of 105 Clay St., Kane, and John Henry Brooks III, 40, of McKeesport, were arraigned before District Judge Richard Luther on the allegations and committed to McKean County Jail, court records indicate.
According to court records, at 11:49 a.m., a Kane-based state trooper pulled over a yellow Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Burt because it had an expired license plate and the exhaust was hanging off.
The trooper approached the passenger side of the car and could allegedly smell marijuana, court records state. He conducted three field sobriety checks on Burt — in all three she allegedly showed signs of impairment — so she was taken to UPMC Kane, where she refused a blood test, court records stated.
In addition to Brooks being a passenger, there was a 4-year-old boy in the car. Court records state that law enforcement officials searched the vehicle and found a scale, baggies, two bags of marijuana, a marijuana pipe, five burnt marijuana joints and a burnt roach clip.
Burt allegedly told police the marijuana belonged to Brooks and said he was giving her marijuana in exchange for staying with her temporarily, court records stated.
Both are charged with possession with the intent to deliver a controlled substance, possession of a small amount of marijuana for personal use and possession of drug paraphernalia, all misdemeanor; Burt is also charged with endangering the welfare of a child, a first-degree misdemeanor; and driving under the influence of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, court records stated.
Brooks was jailed on $50,000 bail, and Burt was jailed on $25,000 bail. Both are scheduled to appear in Central Court on Thursday.
