GREENSBORO, N.C. –– At the YMCA national swimming championships in Greensboro, N.C., Paige Hetrick was the lone representative for the Bradford Family YMCA.
However, she did not go unnoticed among the coaches and swimmers. In the women’s scoring, the Bradford Family YMCA finished in 20th place.
Hetrick began the week by swimming the 200 yard backstroke and qualified for the A final, going 1:59.09 in the morning, and placing her eighth. At night, she moved into fourth place on the podium by dropping an 2.5 seconds from her morning swim. On Wednesday, she followed this swim by going 1:47.75 in the 200 yard freestyle, seeding her second going into the A finals at night. Hetrick dropped another 0.3 seconds off her morning swim and took third place overall.
Hetrick elected to swim the 50 free on Thursday and the swim moved her up from the 13th seed into the eighth seed during preliminaries, gaining another A final. That evening she dropped more time and did a personal best of 23.29, capturing the sixth place medal. Friday was the last day of competition. In the morning, Hetrick was only one of two swimmers who broke the sub-50 second mark in the 100 free, going 49.98 and seeding her second going into the finals that evening. Once again, she was able to drop time and held on to her place, finishing second again in 49.72.
Prior to traveling to Greensboro, Hetrick swam in the Eastern Long Course sectional meet in Buffalo. She qualified for the USA Senior Long Course Championships this summer in the 100 backstroke, going 1:03.39. Paige has also qualified for the US Open meet to be held at the end of the summer.
