SHINGLEHOUSE — A Shinglehouse family has been displaced after a woodstove fire Sunday night.
Members of the Shinglehouse Volunteer Fire Department were called out between 10 and 11 p.m. Sunday night to assist with a fire that was reported on Sunnyside Road.
No injuries were reported, said Shinglehouse Fire Chief Doug Estes. However, he explained the log cabin home succumbed to an accidental woodstove fire. Vincent and Kendra Kellogg and their children had resided in the residence.
The home sustained internal damage, according to Estes, who added, “the building’s probably a total loss.”
Fire departments from Bolivar, N.Y., Portville, N.Y., Elma, N.Y., Westons Mills, N.Y., and Coudersport were called to assist, he said. Firefighters were on scene about 2 ½ hours.
Estes wasn’t sure if the American Red Cross was assisting the Kellogg family, but he noted that the family didn’t ask for help, so the fire department did not call the Red Cross. He said the Kelloggs had family on scene with them at the time of the blaze.
Estes offered a little advice to people with woodstoves in the hopes of preventing another fire.
“Make sure people clean their chimneys, especially when it’s warm like this,” he said, explaining that stuff builds up faster when it’s warm.
