BIRD COUNT: Remember how we talked about how the Great Backyard Bird Count would be happening this month?
Well, if you’d like to count birds alongside fellow McKean County residents, Saturday is your chance. Kinzua Bridge State Park is inviting people to visit the park from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday — or to count birds during that time at your feeder at home.
There will be learning opportunities, too, as park officials are inviting people to “Visit the classroom for a display about types of feeders and strategies for attracting birds.”
Learn more by contacting the park at 814-778-5467 or kinzuabridgesp@pa.gov, or by contacting the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources at www.dcnr.state.pa.us.
The Great Backyard Bird Count will last from Feb. 17-20 and is a project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society.
Speaking of birds: not only are the robins back in McKean County very early, but they’re coming in large numbers, too.
Larry Ralph Bradford reports, “The last two days we have had a flock of robins at least 100 strong pass through the neighborhood of Nelson Avenue and Gregory Avenue.”
The dark spots in the trees are just a few of the many robins that can be seen passing through Bradford.
“They were fast on the move seemingly feeding in trees and on the ground,” Larry added.
TEABERRIES: A reader took this photo of an evergreen teaberry plant on Wednesday in nearby Limestone, N.Y.
Our reader thought at first it might be “an early sign of spring,” but after looking into it discovered “they’re ripe in late fall and can stick around through winter.”
Whether they’re new berries or left over from autumn, that splash of red and green is certainly a welcome sight among the piles of brown, dead leaves.
