The annual Marilla Winter Trek will take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Feb. 12 at Marilla Reservoir — and will do so regardless of the weather conditions.
“Last year, our Marilla Winterfest Winter Trek was canceled because of not enough snow,” according to Rick Lutz, committeeperson for the Tuna Valley Trail Association (TVTA), which sponsors the event. “This year, snow or no snow, we will gather.”
Fortunately, he added, the forecast is calling for snow, and plans are coming together.
The Marilla Winter Trek will provide the opportunity for interested locals to participate in cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, geocaching and hiking the Marilla trails. Volunteers of the TVTA will also offer shuttles to the top of Marilla Springs Trail, as well as lessons in snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
“It’s a great chance for individuals and families alike to get outside and do what people around this area love to do,” Lutz told The Era. “In addition to the winter recreation activities, you can also walk the Hidden Valley/Cornelius Connection Loop or the Bridges Trail.”
Free refreshments will be provided by the TVTA, as well as a chance to warm up with hot chocolate, mulled cider, hot dogs and marshmallows at a bonfire near the Marilla Reservoir gazebo.
The event, which is free and open to the public, has been held for the past six years — except for last year — and has had a wealth of community support, Lutz noted.
“Besides the TVTA committee, we have great support from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford for its student volunteers and equipment,” Lutz stated. “Susan Godfrey is a very experienced snowshoer, and will provide the lessons. Tops Friendly Market donates a lot of the food. And every person who shows up brings their own additions to the event; it’s an inclusive effort, and the community atmosphere at the Winter Trek certainly reflects that.”
Lutz added that, in the past, attendance has spiked when the conditions are snowy and cold — as it is supposed to be during this year’s event.
“Any time you have outdoor activities, people come out,” Lutz commented. “And we always accept donations, but this event isn’t necessarily a fundraiser for the TVTA. It’s more of a demonstration of our commitment to the trails and the community that utilizes them — as well as being fun and interactive for all.”
And with Valentine’s Day coming up, it’s a great opportunity for couples to enjoy an active afternoon together.
“People can come for all four hours or just come visit and go back home,” Lutz said. “There’s no commitment; just encouragement for everyone to come on out and enjoy the day with fellow community members and the TVTA.”
As with all the TVTA events and activities, he added, it’s an effort to create opportunities for the community; a way of giving back.
