SALAMANCA, N.Y. — Allegany State Park will host its annual First Day Hike on New Year’s Day.
The hike — running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. — is described as a relaxing way for people of all ages to get outside and enjoy the winter beauty of the area. The self-guided hike will take place in the Summit Area on the Red House side of the park. The off-trail hike, about two miles in length and easy to moderate in intensity, begins at the Summit warming hut, follows the scenic ridgeline to Stone Tower, then loops back to the warming hut. Interpretive points of interest can be found along the way.
Organizers said participants should begin the hike by stopping in the Summit warming hut to sign-in and pick-up a trail map. Pre-registration is not required. Those taking part should dress in appropriate winter hiking apparel. Weather permitting, snowshoes and trekking poles are encouraged.
After the hike, participants can swing back to the warming hut for a New Year’s social with chili and warm beverages provided by the Friends of Allegany State Park.
