FAMOUS ELK: One Elk County “resident” is featured this month in a full-page spread of a magazine.
A photograph of a large bull elk was spread across Pages 36 and 37 of the November/December issue of Pennsylvania Magazine.
David Levandusky of Weissport — way across the state in Carbon County — snapped the shot in Benezette. David earned an honorable mention in the magazine’s 2016 Wildlife photo contest.
PUMPKIN SPIDER: David Kanally of Coppell, Texas, shared with us a photo of a season-appropriate critter spotted in McKean County.
David writes, “Cheryl Kanally, PAHS Class of 1970 was recently visiting her mom and in-laws in Port Allegany and spotted a ‘pumpkin spider’ on a Halloween walk along Edison O. Bates Drive in Port Allegany, just next to her Alma Mater.”
“The pumpkin spider, also known as the marbled orb spider, is Halloween orange in color. “I had never seen a spider like this,” says Cheryl, “and to spot one on Halloween was a real coincidence!”
KING TUT: It was this day in 1922 that steps leading into King Tutankhamun tomb were found in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt.
It would be another nearly 56 years before the king was immortalized through song on Saturday Night Live, where comedian Steve Martin performed “King Tut” with members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on April 22, 1978.
