ALLEGANY, N.Y. — Austria’s Andreas Ottensamer, principal clarinetist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform in recital at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 14 at St. Bonaventure University’s Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.
In this exclusive New York state appearance, the third concert in the 2016-17 Friends of Good Music concert series, Ottensamer will be accompanied by pianist Holger Groschopp, also of the Berlin Philharmonic, which is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading orchestras.
The duo will perform works by Luigi Bassi, Ernesto Cavallini, Claude Debussy, George Gershwin, Gustav Mahler, Alec Templeton and Carl Maria von Weber.
“I am extremely proud that, through our extensive networking, we are able to present such outstanding and charismatic musicians for their only appearance in the state of New York in our intimate theater,” said Ludwig Brunner, executive director of the Quick Center. “This will be a great experience for anyone in our region who loves music.”
In March 2015, Ottensamer won the Echo Klassik Award (the European equivalent of the Grammy Award) for Instrumentalist of the Year. He has won first prize in competitions for clarinet, cello and piano, and performs as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the world in all the major music venues.
His first album, “Portraits — The Clarinet Album,” was released in June 2013 and features concertos by Copland, Spohr and Cimarosa, plus arrangements of short pieces. He performs on the recording with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra under Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
Apart from his activities within the world of classical music, Ottensamer has widened his horizon to other musical fields, resulting in a recording with the popular American singer/songwriter Tori Amos on her album “Night of Hunters.”
His accompanist for this performance, German pianist Groschopp, studied at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin and has received several prizes, including at the Brahms Competition for Piano in Hamburg.
Groschopp has made many recordings with German and foreign broadcasters and TV stations. His CD “Piano Transcriptions and Paraphrases” (Capriccio label), featuring the works of Ferruccio Busoni, was selected by BBC Music Magazine as one of its five Top Recommendations.
Tickets for this performance are $20 at full price, $16 for senior citizens and St. Bonaventure staff, and $5 for students. For tickets and information, call the Quick Center at (716) 375-2494.
For each Friends of Good Music performance, Quick Center galleries open one hour before the show and remain open throughout intermission. Museum admission is free and open to the public, year round.
