KERSEY — DuBois Central Catholic’s Jordy Frank took a free kick through Port Allegany’s defense and to the house for the only goal of the game and the Lady Cardinals held on for a 1-0 victory over the Lady Gators Wednesday in the girls District 9 Class A soccer playoffs.
“We were trying to hold a high line to get them offsides, but she (Frank) snuck through and made a great kick in about the 15th minute of the first half,” said Travis Cowburn, Port Allegany coach.
The Lady Gators had their fair share of chances, but just could not get the ball in the net
“We had plenty of opportunities,” Cowburn explained. “We had three shots on goal and nine all together, but their goalie was phenomenal and they had a great sweeper. We were well-contested no matter where we went.”
In goal for DCC was Riley Assalone, who had three saves.
“It was pretty even and not one-sided,” Cowburn pointed out. “We can play at this level, but when we got chances we just could not convert them.”
Playing keeper for the Lady Gators was Brianna Roys with eight saves.
Port Allegany finishes the season 11-7-1 and Cowburn was pleased.
“We started out as underdogs, but our girls worked hard every single day,” he stated. “They were over-achievers. Winning is contagious and we had a great record against the Double A schools.
“Everyone stepped up and I couldn’t be more proud of their effort,” he emphasized.
