Lady Owls hold off Brookville rally to win

By Al Lacher Era Sports Writer

Bradford survived a fourth quarter rally by Brookville to hold onto a 45-41 win in District 9 League girls basketball Friday.

Lee Woodmansee scored a game-high 14 points for the Lady Owls and Bri Wells connected for 11 points despite fouling out with 2:48 remaining in the fourth quarter. Hali Olsen led all scorers with 24 points including nine in the fourth quarter.

The game started off with both teams struggling offensively and both playing aggressive defenses. Kam Piscitelli fired a three-point bomb to start the game with 7:12 remaining in the first quarter. It would be the last basket until 4:54 remaining in the quarter when Wells followed a Brooke Shattenberg field goal for a 5-4 score.  Woodmansee scored with 1:35 to go in the quarter for a 7-4 lead.

The second quarter went much like the first quarter with Bradford scoring 12 points behind Brinya Moffet and Wells four points each while holding the Lady Raiders to eight points for a 19-12 halftime score.

“Our perimeter girls did a great job tonight defensively especially in the first half” remarked Lady Owl coach Bob Hannon. “We played a very aggressive tight defense and did a good job on the boards.”

Bradford came out strong offensively in the third quarter with Moffett hitting a field goal and Woodmansee hit a three and added a free throw with 5:47 remaining in the third quarter before Olsen hit a basket to make the score 25-14. Wells hit two free throws and Morgan Roggenbaum drilled a three to give the lady owls a 30-15 lead with 4:29 left in the quarter. Wells and Woodmansee accounted for the last six points in the quarter with the Lady Owls ahead by a comfortable 36-20 score after three quarter.

“We had some nice looks in the third quarter and did a good job getting rebounds in that quarter” said Hannon.

The fourth quarter belonged to Brookville as the Lady Raiders rallied behind Shattenberg’s basket and foul shot to cut the lead to 36-23. Olsen scored the next six points with two field goals and hit a pair of free throws to make the score 36-29 with 5:10 left in the quarter. Wells hit one of two free throws for a 37-29 score with 4:58 remaining. Shattenberg and Olsen both hit two free throws apiece to cut the lead to 37-33 with 3:58 to go. A basket by Raya Hennigan put Bradford up 39-33 when Brookville went four for six from the charity stripe with Olsen scoring a field goal to cut the lead 39-37 with 2:53.

Brookville tied the game 39-39 when Wells picked up her third foul with 2:48 left in the game. Bradford took over the game at that point going five of ten from the foul line to open up a 44-39 lead with 11 seconds left in the game Brookvilles three point shot missed the mark but Bradford was whistled for the foul on the shot. Elania Powell hit two of the three shots to cut the score to 44-41. Woodmansee iced the game hitting the second of two free throws with five seconds left to make the final score 45-41.

“We had a chance tonight and just couldn’t get a clutch offensive rebound. The rebound by number 50 (Moffet)  and our foul that put her to the line turned the game” said Mark Powell the Lady Raiders head coach. .

“This was similar to the last time we played them there, we Didn’t make our free throws and committed too many turnovers. Tonight we hit the free throws and capitalized on their turnovers. We didn’t get down even though Brookville tied the game. It doesn’t help when your playmaker fouls out with three minutes to go, but Woodmansee, Moffett and Hennigan stepped up at the end. Powell hurt us last game so we concentrated on making sure we had someone on her tonight.” Hannon said.

Bradford is now 9-11 on the season with two games remaining. Bradford will host Elk County Catholic Wednesday for senior night. Theyll finish the regular season Friday at Punxsutawney.
