MALL: After Wednesday’s trip down memory lane regarding the Bradford Mall, we had a couple of people share shops they remember from the establishment.
Fran Rovito wrote, “Some of the stores I can recall are Loblaws Grocery before Jubilee at the same location as F.W. Woolworth where Big Lots is now.” Fran also remembers JCPenney TBA Tires & Accessories — “located on the corner that will soon be Sheetz. Later, Firestone moved into that same spot. Firestone was originally at the now location of the Lighthouse restaurant.”
Inside the mall, there was Joanne Fabrics, Singer Sewing Machine, and Fuoco Jewelry watch repair shop.
“That’s all that comes to mind at the moment, but there were many more,” said Fran.
Also, Vina Cole from Smethport tells us, “I worked there in the ‘70s and ‘80s for Sears, and I have a whole list of stores that were in the Bradford Mall.”
In addition to the Sears catalogue store and a few stores Fran mentioned, she also remembers Woolworth, Peoples Drug Store, Hallmark, Brown’s Shoe Store, a bookstore (she doesn’t remember the name) and Dante’s Restaurant.
“That’s just a few of them,” Vina said. Thinking back on the mall in its heyday “brought back memories,” she said.
CHALLENGER: Today marks the 30th anniversary of the day seven astronauts — including New Hampshire teacher Christa McAuliffe — were killed aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger.
The event served as a somber reminder of the risk involved with exploration.
NASA will honor the lost crew members of not only the Challenger, but also Apollo 1 and the Columbia space shuttle during its “Day of Remembrance” today.
For any of our readers who are interested, at 10 a.m., live coverage of the wreath-laying ceremony at the Space Mirror Memorial, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Florida, will air on NASA Television. The Astronauts Memorial Foundation, the non-profit organization that maintains the Space Mirror Memorial, is hosting the event. Starting at 8 p.m. today, the National Geographic Channel will offer space travel-related shows to commemorate the occasion.
Special online content about fallen astronauts can be found at http://www.nasa.gov/dor.
Ceremonies will also be held at several other NASA facilities across the nation.
