COUDERSPORT — Two people were killed in a two-vehicle crash around 7:20 p.m. Friday on Route 872 in Wharton Township.
Collene Ackley, 31, of Coudersport, and Jessica McKay, 34, of Port Allegany, died as a result of the crash, Coudersport-based state police report.
Police said the two drivers, Derrick Gleason, 30, of Coudersport, and Steven Lee Wimer, 37, of Lancaster, were badly injured; Gleason was flown by medical helicopter to Altoona General Hospital and Wimer was flown to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre.
Police said the crash occurred when the vehicle operated by Gleason was travelling north on Route 872 and crossed into the southbound lane where it struck Wimer’s vehicle, then hit the guardrails on the west side of the road and came to rest. Police said, after impact, Wimer’s vehicle continued south and overturned on its side in the southbound lane, coming to rest facing north.
Police said they were assisted on scene by Potter County coroner Kevin Dusenbury and deputy coroners Ken Wingo and Shane Wilson; Potter County district attorney Andy Watson; members of the Austin Volunteer Fire Department; Coudersport Ambulance; Mercy Flight and LifeNet of New York.
