ELLICOTTVILLE, N.Y. — Samila Sosic of Bradford, Pa., is the featured artist at the Ellicottville Memorial Library through September and October.
Sosic is a Bosnian native who moved to New York City in 1992 after graduating with a bachelor of science degree in architecture from the University of Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. She earned degrees in art from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and the Academy of Art in San Francisco and is currently assistant professor of art at University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
Her passion is to paint Pennsylvania’s landscapes and the farmlands woven into it. Her series, “Rural Beauty,” is about capturing the reflection of lights on the structures of the rural farms. The concept of this series is to capture the diversity of farmlands and architectural structures enhanced by the weather, special light conditions and seasonal change. Using these structures she fuses two different careers in her life: architecture and painting.
Said Sosic of her work, “I love Pennsylvania’s landscape and something that makes it even more adorable are the farmlands woven into it. Wherever I look, I see countless shades of green. Rolling hills of crops, rivers, and lakes all around create the perfect sceneries for paintings. This land is a lifetime supply of inspiration for an artist who enjoys this subject. The desire to share the beauty of this land, and tell my story about it, is shown throughout the paintings in this series.”
In addition to the Ellicottville Memorial Library, Sosic’s paintings are on exhibit at Aardvark in Ellicottville; ECCOTA Gallery in Ridgway, Pa.; and the Depot Gallery in Kane, Pa.
The Ellicottville Memorial Library is located at 6499 Maples Road in Ellicottville. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except Sunday. Evening hours are 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.
