CORFU, N.Y. — The Bradford Drillers gave their dads a nice Father’s Day present by winning the 2015 Darien Lake Pitch-n-Hit 13u Baseball Tournament on Sunday.
The 26-team tournament featured teams from Northwestern Pennsylvania and Western New York, including teams from the Buffalo, Syracuse and Rochester areas.
The Drillers got started in pool play Friday afternoon with a 7-1 victory over the Northern Tier Diamond Jaxx. Leading the Drillers offensively were Tyler Gigliotti (2-for-4, double, triple, 2 runs), Howie Stuckey (2-for-3, RBI) and Cole Sebastian (3-for-3, triple).
Gigliotti picked up the win on the mound allowing, just one hit and walking four while recording four strikeouts.
On Saturday, the Drillers got their second win in pool play by shutting out the Clarence Reds 5-0.
Caleb Nuzzo had an RBI double, Peyton Manion an RBI single and Derek Sunafrank was 2-for-3 to lead the team at the plate.
Stuckey and Manion were on the hill, combining on a one-hitter while striking out one and walking four.
In their second game on Saturday, the Drillers were able to finish pool play undefeated by beating the Syracuse Sports Zone 5-0.
Colby Keane, Sunafrank and Nuzzo all had RBI doubles while Gavin Babcock pitched a complete game three-hitter.
With the victory, the team was able to secure the fourth seed heading into the single elimination tournament on Sunday.
On Sunday, the Drillers plated five runs in the first inning on their way to defeating the CNY All-Stars 10-3.
Babcock was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Sebastian 2-for-3 with a double and Manion had an RBI double to lead the Drillers at the plate.
Hunter Fox and Sebastian were on the mound for the win striking out seven while surrendering three hits and five walks.
In their semifinal game, the Drillers were able to take advantage of a five-run fourth inning and defeat the Lancaster/Depew Fury 11-4. The team was led by Cameron Magee (1-for-2, 2 RBIs), Gigliotti (2-for-3, double, RBI), Nuzzo (3-for-3, double, 2 RBIs) and Sunafrank (2-for-4, double, 3 RBIs).
On the mound, Manion and Sebastian struck out one and gave up seven hits and two walks in earning the win.
In their final game of the tournament, the Drillers squared off against the previously undefeated Buffalo Rockpile. Behind a strong pitching performance from Stuckey and Babcock, the Drillers were able to grind out a 4-2 victory to claim the weekend championship.
The duo combined to hold the Rockpile to just four hits and two walks while striking out eight.
Nuzzo and Sunafrank had triples for the Drillers while Babcock was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The team is coached by Jeff Gigliotti, Jeff Stuckey and Kevin Keane.
