PORT ALLEGANY: Wingtip bows for the Piper Cub J-3 plane were manufactured in Port Allegany.
Don Mangold of Port Allegany called to point out the error we had in the May 25 column in which he was telling us about the local connection between McKean County and the aircraft industry.
We had incorrectly written the parts were made in Bradford. We think we were confused because the company that would eventually morph into the Piper Aircraft Co. was located in Bradford until a fire destroyed the factory.
In fact, Don told us his wife did work for the planing mill where the wingtip bows were made, and he said there are men who worked in the factory who are still alive.
We certainly didn’t mean to insult Port Allegany.
LOCAL AUTHOR: We had a phone message from Vic Longo of Bradford a couple of days ago. “I just wanted you to know we have an author from Bradford,” he said.
Vic’s cousin, Ray Johnson, wrote a book called “My Trip to the A&P: A Timeless Tale.” Johnson writes under the name R. Andrew Johnson, and his book can be found on Amazon.
We looked it up for ourselves, and the book is about an incredible adventure that happens on a seemingly ordinary trip to the A&P.
“My wife’s reading the book,” Vic said. “It’s really interesting.”
He noted that his mother and Ray’s mother are sisters, and Ray grew up in Bradford.
ROAD PATCHING: Carl Milks contacted us with praise for some of the local road crews
He writes, “I’d like to commend the crews for the patching and re-paving of our roads after the long, destructive winter — GOOD JOB guys!!!”
Carl does have a suggestion for a couple areas that could use some attention.
“If anyone has a few shovelfuls of material left, could somebody drop some into the RR tracks crossing on Bolivar Drive and the ‘launch ramp’ on Seaward Avenue? Would be mighty appreciative if it could happen.”
