Student achievement: Port Allegany High School honors students during awards ceremony

PORT ALLEGANY (EC) — Port Allegany High School students were honored for their achievements during the annual awards ceremony held at the school.

Among the awards handed out were the following: 

Student Handbook Cover Design winner was Cora Herbstritt; the Science Award, Bausch and Lomb – medal and opportunity to compete for a University of Rochester Scholarship – Ashley Anderson; and Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony Award in Humanities and Social Sciences from the University of Rochester – Nate Lowery; Peer Helper Officer Awards were presented to: Allison Lathrop, President; Brooke Roys, vice president; Lynae Delacour, secretary; and Christopher Lashway, treasurer.

Student Council Senior Awards went to: Lynae Delacour, vice president; Monica Johnson, parliamentarian; Christopher Lashway, treasurer; Allison Lathrop, secretary; Brooke Roys, president, and Somer Safford.

National Honor Society Awards were presented to: Matthew Causer, Lynae Delacour, Treasurer; Alex Dynda, Hannah Ernst, Adam Koehler, Charles Kysor, Malari Lapp, Secretary, Christopher Lashway, Christian Moses, Elizabeth Moses, Hannah Ostrander, Vice President; Rikki Rennells, Brooke Roys, President; Jefferson Stehle and Casey Vollmer. 

Outdoor Sportsman Awards went to Best Fishing – Ashley Ahearn; Best Hunting – Kelly Haggard; and top three points: 1, Hunter Freer; 2, Dylan Bundy; and 3, Cody Lentz.  

The Bob Davies-Lou Foy Student Athlete Award went to: Brooke Roys and Chris Lashway. The David Lacher Memorial Award for Female Athlete of the Year went to Brooke Roys, Lynae Delacour and Somer Buchsenschutz. The Thomas Taylor Memorial Award for the Male Athlete of the Year went to Chris Lashway. The Air Force Scholar Athlete Award to Brooke Roys and Chris Lashway. The North Tier League Scholarship, $300, went to Christopher Lashway.   

The Art Award was presented to Sabrina Jungclaus; John Phillip Sousa Band Award – Adam Koehler; Senior Band Award – Hannah Ernst and Jefferson Stehle; Loren B. Wright Scholarship of $200 – Hannah Ernst; Louis Armstrong Jazz Award – Charlie Kysor; National School Choral Award – Charlie Kysor; Senior Chorus Award – Hannah Ernst, Charlie Kysor; Fred Waring/Director’s Award for Chorus – Jefferson Stehle; Senior Drama Award – Adam Koehler and Charles Kysor; and the Drama Service Award – Zoe Danton-Kinney. 

Varsity Club Plaques were presented to those who earned eight or more varsity letters during grades 9, 10, 11 and 12: Hannah Buchsenschutz, Comer Buchsenschutz, Lynae Delacour, Farrah Fischer, Hunter Freer, Adam Koehler, Chris Lashway, Allison Lathrop and Brooke Roys.  

The Technology Education Award given by Citizens and Northern Bank, $50 – Casey Vollmer; English Award given by Verallia – $200 – Malari Lapp; The Science, Mathematics, and Social Studies, $200 each and all three given by the Port Allegany Rotary Club – Chris Lashway; Spanish Award, Verallia – $200 – Hannah Ostrander; French Award, Pittsburgh Corning Corporation – $100 – Charlie Kysor.

The Area V Junior Wrestling Scholarship of $1,000 went to: Casey Vollmer. The Bernard Freeman and Kathleen Sallade Scholarship of $250 went to: Hunter Freer and Lynae Delacour. The Eldred Knights of Columbus #3728 Scholarship of $1,000 went to: Matt Causer. The Entrepreneurship Club Scholarships went to Matt Main, Adam Koehler, Caitlyn Harvey, Hannah Ernst, Hannah Ostrander, Matt Causer, Chris Lashway, Trent Miller and Charlie Kysor.  

The Gerald Stayer Memorial Scholarship of $400 went to Chris Lashway; Gilbert (GIB) and Billie Allen Award of $500 went to Charlie Kysor; the John J. Murphy Family Scholarship of $10,000 went to Chris Lashway. The John Thrash Memorial Scholarship of $300 per year for four years went to Chris Lashway. The PAEA High Education Award given by the Port Allegany Education Association of $300 went to Hannah Ernst; Patricia Lloyd Memorial Award of $200, administered by the Lyons Club went to Hannah Ostrander and Chris Lashway. 

The Raymond Charles Varney Scholarship of $2,000 given to a resident of Roulette went to Hannah Donnelly. The Richard K. Taylor Scholarship of $500 went to Jefferson Stehle. The Springer/Brown Scholarship (Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union) of $500 went to Emilee Harkness, Alexis Penick and Charlie Kysor. The T. Lee Bennett Scholarship of $1,000 went to Hannah Ernst. The Robert J. Edgreen Memorial Scholarship four-year scholarship went to Chris Lashway and Chris also was the recipient of the Lt. William E. Daisley Jr., Mathematics Award of $200. The Air Force Science and Math Award went to Alex Dynda.
