BROOKVILLE — One streak ended in 2014 and another was started on Wednesday.
DuBois ended Bradford’s 15-year run atop District 9 Class AAA track and field last year, but the Owls reclaimed their throne in dominating fashion at the 2015 championships at Brookville High School.
In typical Bradford fashion, it was a total team effort, as they easily outpaced second-place DuBois, 146-70.
“It was a really good meet all up and down the line,” said Bradford coach Tom Tessena. “Everybody was chipping in points. When you win for 15 years in a row and you don’t win one year, it feels like you’ve never won. I was extremely pleased.”
The Owls won eight individual events and two of the three relays, led by junior Alex Colosimo and sophomore Mitch Vleminckx, who won three events each.
Both were on the winning 400 and 1600 relay teams, while Colosimo won the 300 hurdles and Vleminckx the 200.
Colosimo was part of two of the most exciting races of the day, beating Clearfield’s Mason Royer by .07 seconds (41.58 to 41.65) in the 300s. This after Royer had beat him by as close a margin as possible, .01 seconds (15.51 to 15.52) in the finals of the 110s.
Vleminckx was also third in the long jump.
“He came about as close as you could come to four first-place finishes,” Tessena said of Colosimo. “Vleminckx, for a sophomore, that’s just a fantastic job.”
The Owls had four double winners — senior Justin Keller in the pole vault and 4×1, junior Tyler Nuzzo in the 400 and 4×4 and freshmen Logan Caruso (1600, 3200) and John Eakin (100, 4×1).
As well as having Eakin and Keller, the 4×1 also featured Vleminckx and another freshman, Andy Pantuso in a season-best time of 45.66.
Keller’s vault was also a personal best at 13-9, while Nuzzo coasted to victory in the 400 in 52.49.
“Nuzzo also ran a tremendous leg in the 4×4,” noted Tessena.
Jacob Soto finished second in the pole vault and Jeremy Fitton fifth.
“That came at a really great time,” Tessena said of the 15 points the Owls took in the pole vault.
Meanwhile, Caruso edged teammate Max Paterniti by just over a second (4:42.71 to 4:43.96) in the 1600 and distanced himself from Clearfield’s Kyle Biancuzzo to win the 3200 by nearly 10 seconds.
Eakin, like Caruso, turned in an impressive performance for a freshman, edging DuBois’ Dante Dawson to win the 100 and anchoring the 4×1 relay. He also finished third in the shot put.
“Those two, for freshmen, just did fantastic,” said Tessena.
Senior Brandon Hughes uncorked a throw of 170 feet in his second attempt to easily win the javelin, punching his tickets to states.
“That was a very good throw,” Tessena said.
Paterniti added a second place finish in the 800, with Punxsutawney’s Eric Ingros winning the event.
Steve Zawatski earned big points for the Owls in the throws, taking second place in both the shot put and the discus.
Other Owls that placed included Ryan Whittemore (4th in javelin, 5th in discus), Kyle Whitmer (4th in discus), Jaron Ambrose (5th in 3200) and Noah Whittemore (4th in 400, 4th in 100, 5th in 200).
“I feel really good about today,” Tessena said. “We had a pretty good margin of victory and qualified quite a few people to states.”
Tessena also wished to give thanks to his coaching staff.
“I want to thank Scott Mealy, Mark Kelley, Larry Stillman, Matt Teribery and Natalie Marasco for all their help,” he said. “They all did a great job together. I want to congratulate the girls on the great job they did. They made it a really exciting meet against DuBois, who is pretty strong all the way around.”
