Race to succeed Silver as New York speaker appears sewn up

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A Democratic lawmaker from the Bronx is poised to take over leadership of the New York state Assembly after the resignation of longtime speaker Sheldon Silver.

The state Assembly is expected to vote as early as Tuesday on replacing Silver, who is facing federal corruption charges. The chamber is controlled by Democrats, a majority of whom now support Assemblyman Carl Heastie (HAY’-stee).

The only other contender conceded Monday to Heastie.

Silver’s resignation as speaker is effective 11:59 p.m. Monday. It comes after the Manhattan Democrat was charged with taking nearly $4 million in payoffs and kickbacks. He says he expects to be exonerated and will keep his Assembly seat.

Heastie vowed Monday to pursue a series of ethics reforms, which many lawmakers had said was a requirement for their support.
