KANE — The Kane Area school board has approved the deputy tax collectors for the communities which are served the school district.
According to district administrative assistant Linda K. Anderson, the district met in a special session on Monday and approved the deputy tax collectors after the measure was voted down at their regular monthly session on Jan. 8.
Anderson said the school board approved the following appointments from Kane, Mount Jewett and townships which feed into the school district: Becky Gullifer was approved as the deputy tax collector for Kane borough and Hamilton Township. Gullifer is the current tax collector in Wetmore Township.
Mark Kossack was approved to the position for Mount Jewett. Kossack is the husband of current Mount Jewett tax collector Darlene Kossack. Wetmore Township approved current Kane borough tax collector Marianne Rook as their deputy tax collector.
Highland Township, Elk County approved Carol Moran as their deputy tax collector. Sam Moran is the tax collector for Highland Township. Judith Haight was approved as the deputy tax collector of Jones Township.
The measure was voted down earlier this month. Newly approved state legislation requires all elected tax collectors to appoint a deputy tax collector to “settle taxes during any incapacitation of the elected tax collector.” The motion was defeated at the Jan. 8 meeting 2 to 7 with only school board president Claire Ann Buckley — herself the former tax collector in Hamilton Township — and Dick Coleman voting in favor.
At the Jan. 8 meeting, school board director Keith Hastings weighed in on the matter before the vote was cast. Hastings said his decision to vote against the measure was because he thought the deputy tax collector should live in the municipality for which they are responsible for collecting taxes.
The motion carried. School board director Susan Grolemund was absent from Monday’s meeting.
The school board also meet in an executive session regarding a disciplinary measure.
The next regularly scheduled meeting will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 12. A reception welcoming new school district superintendent Bob Gaetano will be held after the meeting.
