Lady Panthers make it five in a row with 69-46 win over Spartans

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Pitt-Bradford women’s basketball team has now won five consecutive Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference games in a row with its 69-46 victory over the D’Youville Spartans on Wednesday.

Sophomore Kaserra Owens and senior Alicia Kimmel each tallied 18 points to pave the way for the Panthers’ potent offensive attack. Owens added six rebounds, two offensive and four defensive, while Kimmel tacked on five total rebounds and one assist.

Also registering a double-digit scoring performance was junior Abby Brate. Brate wrapped up her night with 10 points, five total rebounds and a game-high seven assists.

Pitt-Bradford (9-4, 6-1) was strong on the boards throughout the contest, racking up a total of 42 rebounds to the Spartans’ 30. D’Youville (8-6, 4-4) appeared to have slippery hands during the matchup as Pitt-Bradford caused a total of 19 turnovers and committed just 11 of its own.

The Spartans managed to bury the first bucket of the night on a layup from Alexis Smith 15 seconds into the action. The Panthers tied the game moments later with a jumper from Kimmel. Kimmel then hit a second jump shot at the 17:58 mark of the first period to put Pitt-Bradford in the lead for the rest of the game.

With 7:47 to play in the opening half, another short jumper from Kimmel gave Pitt-Bradford a double-digit advantage, 25-12, and it would stick for the duration of the first half. The Panthers entered the locker room at the break leading 33-19.

Pitt-Bradford shot 42.4 percent in the opening half, while D’Youville headed into the break shooting just 36.8 percent.

The second half offered little resistance to the home team as Pitt-Bradford continued to pour it on D’Youville. The Panthers blew open their lead as the second period progressed, moving the advantage to as many as 25 points with just over three minutes to play.

With 2:27 remaining, head coach Patrick Daniel emptied the bench and received solid play from his backup unit as the Panthers allowed the clock to expire and earned themselves a solid conference road win.

“Tonight we once again played good, focused and disciplined basketball,” Daniel remarked. “We wanted to really play well going into a big home game this Saturday against La Roche.”

For the game, Pitt-Bradford shot 41.9 percent and was 16-of-20 from the line. D’Youville finished its night 31.8 percent from the floor, while making 17-of-26 from the stripe.

The Lady Panthers now turn their focus to the AMCC’s first-place La Roche Redhawks. The Redhawks come to town for a 1 p.m. tip at the KOA Arena on Saturday.
