McKEAN COUNTY: A visitor to McKean County has once again taken note of some the area’s interesting features.
In “8 Surprising Facts About Mid-Pennsylvania,” travel writer Malerie Yolen-Cohen lists some of the attractions of the Allegheny National Forest area.
The article was posted Monday to www.huffingtonpost.com.
Bradford’s “Billion Dollar Oil Field,” which visitors can learn about at the Penn Brad Oil Museum, is featured. The article also mentions the oil well next to McDonald’s in Bradford — the oldest operating well in the area.
Yolen-Cohen makes mention of Holgate Toys, which had manufactured wooden toys in Kane for decades before moving to Bradford a few years ago, and she talks about how production of Wooly Willy began in Smethport in 1955.
While Smethport will always be the birthplace of Wooly Willy, Patch Products, the company which owns the brand, closed its Smethport factory earlier this year.
Other attractions included are the Lodge at Glendorn, the Mansion District Inn, Kinzua Bridge and the Zippo-Case Museum.
RESERVOIR: Our associate editor, Marcie Schellhammer, found this June 1964 photo of what is now called the James Morrison Memorial Bridge. Some of you might also know it as Casey Bridge or Cornplanter Bridge.
The bridge was built in preparation for the building of the Kinzua Dam — and the subsequent forming of the Allegheny Reservoir. It’s where Route 59 crosses the water in Warren County near its border with McKean County.
The dam and reservoir weren’t built until 1965, so instead of water, you can see future lake bottom in the photo.
