SMETHPORT — A Kane man was sentenced Thursday in McKean County Court for assault charges stemming from an attempted suicide-by-cop incident.
Larry P. Walker II, 42, will serve six to 23 1/2 months in McKean County Jail and three years of probation for charges of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and a summary charge.
Walker pleaded no contest Oct. 23 to allegations he moved toward Mount Jewett Police Officer Steven Hale while holding two knives and followed Kane Borough Police Officer William Nichols for several blocks while holding knives trying to get police to shoot him.
Nichols attended the sentencing to tell President Judge John Pavlock of the impact the incident had on him and his family. “For five blocks I walked backwards while this individual followed me at (a distance of 15 feet).” He explained his training taught him 21 feet was considered a safe distance from someone with a knife.
“I could have shot him,” said Nichols, but he felt that would have been more damaging to the community and Walker. He added that he did not believe Walker felt remorseful and said, “Basically, I’m serving a life sentence dealing with this mentally.”
Walker told Pavlock he was very depressed at the time of the incident. “I am truly grateful that Officer Nichols showed such great restraint,” he noted.
Pavlock noted during the hearing that Walker is a veteran, and he wondered if anyone from the Veterans Administration had reached out to him.
