REPLICA: We hear the Oswayo Memorial Valley Library in Shinglehouse has a neat new display in its children’s room, for anyone who wishes to stop by and see it.
We’re told Millport resident Bill Dickerson made a replica of the New York and Pennsylvania Railroad’s Millport Depot. The replicated depot appears as it did in 1896 — 118 years ago. Imagine how different the town looked then!
We hear Bill put a lot of work into the piece.
HALLOWEEN: After we asked for Halloween stories from readers, we received a response from one person who remembers celebrating out Interstate Parkway.
“Way at the State Park end of Interstate Parkway back in the late 1940s, most of the residents were related and all we cousins trick-or-treated in groups of 4 or 5. We all dressed as hobos as old clothes were all we had — store-bought costumes were unheard of.
“I don’t know if “downtown” as we called it had Halloween rules, but we went out for 2 or 3 evenings getting mostly apples or a few pieces of candy corn. It took up most of the evening because houses were spread out and invariably we had to go inside so they could comment on how we had grown, how we were doing in school, and pump us for any gossip we had learned along the way.
“Some of the older boys tipped over outhouses, but that was as far as any damage went.”
Great fun. We look forward to hearing more stories over the next few days.
FALL’S HERE: We’re in the thick of autumn now.
We’ve definitely been feeling it the past week or longer, that feeling that now is just a transitional time leading to the winter season. The cold weather makes us feel a little slower. A little hungrier, too.
Sounds like a good weekend for a homemade pot of chili or soup.
We’d settle for a can of tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. We can’t hibernate, so we’d better save our energy.
Bradford conjures up some pretty amazing winters.
