PORT ALLEGANY (EC) — Still taking the lead in plans for Port Allegany’s 2016 bicentennial celebration, the Canoe Place Historical Society of Port Allegany Inc. met Wednesday evening at the S.W. Smith Library.
It has been established that the choice of 1816 as the “founding” year is based on the fact the first group of permanent settlers, authorized by the state government, came to the area then, and did establish a community.
The celebration will be held June 15-19, 2016. A broad-based Bicentennial committee will be needed, the society and other interested people believe. To that end, the historical society will notify all local organizations that their input is needed. Some groups may want to send delegates, and some may want to plan their group’s special efforts and events for Bicentennial week.
A logo for the Bicentennial is a must, planners said. They envision a contest, with students of the Port Allegany Elementary School and the Junior-Senior High School to participate, presumably through the art teachers.
The group looked at booklets published in connection with the sesquicentennial and quasquicentennial celebrations.
The historical society will recess until after the holidays.
