CHEEKKTOWAGA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a Buffalo-area teenager has pleaded guilty in the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian last summer.
Eric County prosecutors say Thursday that 18-year-old Devin Scagnelli of the town of Cheektowaga pleaded guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of a fatal accident.
Police say Scagnelli was driving on a road in his hometown around 7 a.m. Aug. 24 when his vehicle jumped the curb and fatally struck 47-year-old Ricky Mullar, who was out for a morning walk.
Prosecutors say the teen initially stopped and got of his vehicle, but then got back in and fled the scene. He was spotted by an off-duty police officer who followed his car, stopping it a mile from the accident scene.
Scagnelli faces up to seven years in state prison when he’s sentenced Nov. 20.
