Can you feel it?
The momentum is building. Bradford and the surrounding region is coming back — one new storefront, sidewalk, home and organization at a time.
Not that it ever really left. Bradford is too gruff for that. Despite several years of battling against economic doldrums — some of which still exist — the tiny town that could is starting to regain its feet again. Like a prize-fight boxer in the middle rounds of a grueling fight.
Look at a revitalized Main Street — the core of the region — as evidence. Since January alone, more than 10 new stores have either opened or will open downtown. From clothing and retail stores, to a now variety of restaurants fitting any taste, downtown truly has it all.
And the people are starting to come back for a visit. Over the summer, there were several days and nights where locals and visitors alike mingled about downtown, checking out stores, grabbing a bite to eat, catching a movie. Annual events also add to the mix, be it the Festa Italiana, Autumn Daze car show, Pumpkin Fest or an Old Fashioned Christmas.
The rebound can be attributed to several things. Energetic city officials working hard to bring empty storefronts to life, the installation of police cameras to deter crime, local business people willing to put their money where their mouth is, including developers that are refurbishing downtown businesses in an effort to keep it local. Last, but not least, are area residents themselves, who are giving downtown a try again, some after maybe years of being away.
Neighborhoods are also getting a taste of the progress, with the ongoing Second Ward Neighborhood Partnership Program and the finishing touches being put on similar renovations in the Third Ward section of the city. These efforts represent businesses and private enterprise working hand-in-hand with the city in a successful partnership to get it back on its feet. And, it’s working — well.
We would be remiss not to mention the progress also being made in neighboring Foster Township (where the long-time moribund Bradford Mall is having a comeback) and Bradford Township, which are both experiencing an economic upswing. Lewis Run Borough is also in the mix.
We invite you to look around. Stop in a store. Try one of the culinary treats being whipped up at an eatery. “Flame the Main.” We believe you’ll like what you see.
