SALAMANCA, N.Y. — The construction of 15 new, upscale cabins off Bova Road in the Red House area of Allegany State Park is on schedule for completion in November.
A number of the new cabins are in various stages of construction, with crews framing and closing in units, while other crews are installing roofs and working in the interior.
According to Gary Quattrone, Allegany State Park manager, 13 identical cabins on Parallel Trail on the Quaker side of the 65,00-acre state park built earlier this year have been a hit with campers.
“Everybody’s happy,” he said. “They are selling pretty well.”
The biggest selling points of the newer cabins: Indoor plumbing, including a toilet, shower and kitchen sink. There are also two bedrooms — one with a queen-size bed and the other with twin beds and a kitchen in a large common area with a table and chairs and a futon. There’s also a microwave with a convection oven, a refrigerator and sink.
The 28-cabin project is a $2.1 million public/private collaboration between the state Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and ASP Partners LLC, a Westchester County lodging and management company. The project also got a $420,000 grant from Empire State Development Corp.
ASP Partners LLC will manage and maintain the cabins for 20 years, after which time they will revert to Allegany State Park. They’re also expected to pitch in with mowing and snow removal.
The cabins are being rented through the State Parks system, for which Allegany State Park will receive a portion of the rental fee.
The cabins will be cleaned and maintained by ASP Partners LLC staff, not Parks staff maintenance.
The upscale cabins rent for slightly less than the Fancher-style cottages: $695 a week or $173.75 for a night. Those cottages convinced parks officials of the need for more of the upscale accommodations.
“Just bring your food and your clothes,” Quattrone said.
The upscale cabins can be reserved up to nine months in advance, as with other cabins and campsites, through the online State Park system or at the Red House and Quaker rental offices.
