ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a northern New Mexico sheriff indicted for roughing up a motorist made a third questionable traffic stop.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said in court papers Tuesday that Rio County Sheriff Thomas Rodella unlawfully stopped a 40-year-old motorist during a fit of road rage last year.
Prosecutors say Rodella in plain clothes pulled over Jacob Ledesma while in an unmarked SUV after Ledesma passed him. Documents say Rodella threw his badge at the Las Cruces resident when he didn’t know Rodella was the county’s sheriff.
Authorities say it was the third questionable stop Rodella has made.
Rodella’s attorney Robert Gorence did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press.
Rodella was indicted last month on conspiracy to violate a motorist’s civil rights during a March encounter with another motorist. He has pleaded not guilty.
