BAILEY: We thought our readers would be interested to learn we heard an update from the owner of a dog featured in Monday’s column.
On Monday, we wrote about JoEllen Wankel, who wrote a story that was recently published in “Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Dog Did What?” about her dog, “Spirit.”
Unfortunately, JoEllen was unable to keep the dog, and “Spirit” was adopted to another family through the McKean County SPCA.
The pet’s new owner recognized her own dog in the column and called to say “Spirit,” who now goes by the name “Bailey,” is doing well.
She really just wanted to assure JoEllen that “Bailey” is being well taken care of and let her know the pet is able to go for walks and boats rides. The dog also has several siblings now.
We were happy to hear “Bailey” went on to bring joy to another family, and we’re sure JoEllen will be, too.
EUCHRE: Does it seem to anyone else we got a lot of rain on Monday night?
We’re not one to let a wet summer bring us down, though. A rainy afternoon is just an opportunity to make a mug of hot chocolate and sit down with family or neighbors to a board or card game.
One of our family favorites is the card game euchre, a game which is simple enough to learn in a sitting, but there’s enough strategy to keep us interested even after years of playing.
What’s best about the game though, or any game, really, is the fact that it provides a chance to interact with real people right next to you. And, if all goes well, it’s fun to be a sore loser — or a bragging winner.
So, whether your game is euchre, checkers or Trivial Pursuit, on the next rainy afternoon, we recommend you turn off your television, put down your cell phone and sit down to a game with those closest to you.
The website www.pagat.com has a collection of rules for numerous card and tile games. Another good source for ideas on games to play is www.mastersgames.com, which offers the rules for a number of other traditional games.
