Helping Hands Retreat helps children deal with loss

When a child loses a loved one, being able to express their feelings effectively is critical.

The second annual “Helping Hands Retreat,” scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 7 at Callahan Park, is designed to help children express what they’re feeling through fun and meaningful activities.

The free event, sponsored by Bradford Regional Medical Center and VNA of Northwest PA., is funded through the Bradford Hospital Foundation’s Melissa A. Price Children’s Bereavement Camp Fund.

Stacy Williams, organizer of the retreat from the medical center, said it replaces an overnight camp that had been held in the past.

“People do have to register for the day camp because I want to make sure I have enough food and supplies,” Williams said. Assisting with the camp are Oxana Panol, social worker, and The Rev. Joann Piatko.

Williams said the camp is open to any child, ages 7 to 12, who has experienced the loss of a loved one, pet or friend through separation, divorce or death.

Activities during the day will include games, crafts, lunch, activities that include making memory boxes, games and swimming, snacks, a scavenger hunt and awards.
