HONEY BEE: Bradford resident Terri Hanold shared this photo of a honey bee she spotted this week.
Terri writes: “We know it’s summer when the honey bees are out.”
She said this bee was having a bad day, but was soon back on its feet collecting pollen.
“This honey bee was rescued when drowning and is now reunited back with nature!” she happily reported.
On a similar note, daysoftheyear.com tells us that today is National Iced Tea Day, which sounds like a perfect match for a jar of locally-made honey.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac website offers this recipe for Dog-Days Iced Tea.
It calls for:
• Six bags of black tea
• Two tablespoons of sugar (May we suggest honey instead?)
• 1⁄2 cup of mint leaves and sprigs (For anyone with a yard, mint is easy to grow — just be warned it may be a little easy. Choose a spot at the edge of the yard perhaps where it doesn’t matter if it spreads.)
• One to 11⁄2 cups of chilled orange juice
• one orange, sliced crosswise
• one lemon, sliced crosswise.
• Ice
“Brew a strong tea in about 6 cups water. While still hot, add sugar and about a dozen mint leaves. Let cool.”
The Almanac then tells you to take out the mint and tea bags and add the other ingredients.
The recipe makes six to eight servings.
We’re sure there are many ways to revise the recipe, depending on the drinker’s tastes. Green tea instead of black? Lime instead of orange?
Adding a shot of rum, sitting on your porch swing in the evening watching the sun set as you sip?
We’re sure you can think of something.
