IT’S TODAY: Just a quick reminder that today is primary election day in Pennsylvania.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Bradford and elsewhere across the four-county region.
Among the races that voters will be eligible to cast choices for are governor and lieutenant governor; the 5th Congressional District seat currently held by U.S. Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Pa.; state Reps. Martin Causer, R-Turtlepoint, Matt Gabler, R-Brockway, and Kathy Rapp, R-Warren.
There are also many smaller races that don’t get as much recognition, but are equally important to the democratic process, such as state committee posts.
While we don’t normally use this space to chastise, we found it disappointing to see that local election officials are predicting a low voter turnout for the region.
While not totally surprising given this year’s primary is in an “off year” and lacks the gusto of local municipal races, as well as the restricting nature of a primary election and Pennsylvania’s closed party system, the old adage holds true — those who don’t vote lose their right to complain.
For a listing of candidates, visit mckeancountypa.org and search under voter registration and elections. Another helpful website for first time voters and the like is www.votespa.com, which is jam-packed with information on the voting process in Pennsylvania.
All it takes is a few minutes. Just one vote could make all the difference.
ROUGH ROADS: We’ve all seen them — and felt them on the seat of our pants. Rough roads. Potholes. Highways that feel like they’ve been put through a cheese grater.
Roads filled with potholes are as common in the spring across northwestern Pennsylvania as flowers blooming. This year’s unmerciful winter did not help matters.
To that end, we are looking to have readers share with us what they feel are the worst of the worst. Which roads and highways resemble the craters on the moon?
Send us your thoughts for roadways in McKean, Potter, Elk and Cameron counties. Address them to the email news@bradfordera.com and we’ll share them with our readers in a future column. Be sure to be specific about what highway is in need of care and provide locations.
We would be remiss, however, not to offer a large tip of the hat to the local road crews and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, who have been diligently working to try and patch the damage on area roads during breaks in the weather. Kudos! We are noticing the difference.
Now, if anybody has the magic key to bringing back the warmth of summer to the area …
