I heartedly support the town’s program to have pickup/cleanup during the month of April. The tawny neighborhoods are fine, but much of the town is in sad disrepair. If you can survive your daily walk without fracturing an ankle on the corrupt sidewalks or slip on garbage littered everywhere, you have done well.
I was going to join in on the cleanup until I read the McKean County Court’s recent sentencing of a total of 1,125 community service hours (355 hours for Bradford). Then I thought, why don’t those of us who play by the rules and pay taxes set up our lawn chairs and supervise those who don’t?
A total of 1,125 hours? Has anyone ever read an accounting of these hours being completed? I never see anyone doing anything. We read of the hours being levied, but we never read of them being performed or consummated or completed. Certainly, these individuals aren’t being given a “wink and a nod” after completing a token number of hours. Or are they?
Is there someone out there who would like to address the question and show some validation that, indeed, 1,125 hours of penitential service will benefit our fair community?
