The Pitt-Bradford men’s tennis team swung its way to a second consecutive sweep after defeating conference foe Mount Aloysius 9-0 Saturday.
With the win, the Panthers open conference-play with a 1-0 record.
Pitt-Bradford (2-1, 1-0) used strong performances from its doubles pairs to begin the scoring in the first part of the match.
Freshman Konstantin Teverovskiy and senior Allan Miller began the match as the top doubles pair for the Panthers. The two defeated the Mounties’ top pair 8-1. Senior Travis Scida and junior Ian Vaughan defeated the second-seeded pair 8-4, while junior Dylan Nuzzo and freshman Jordan Dugan knocked off the Mounties in the final doubles pairing, 8-4.
In the singles portion of the meet, Teverovskiy claimed victory in game one 6-0, 6-0. Scida secured his win by defeating Mount Aloysius’ Matt Hample 6-2, 6-2. Scida’s victory assured the Panthers a win over the Mounties, but Pitt-Bradford was eyeing its second sweep with four games remaining.
Miller defeated Justin Fleegle 6-4, 6-0, to take game three. Vaughan kept the hopes alive with his game-four victory, 6-3, 6-2. Game five was never close as Dugan ran away with it early, defeating Joey Gearhart 6-1, 6-1.
For the second match in a row, the sweep came down to Nuzzo’s performance in the final game. Nuzzo handled the pressure and knocked off Kevin Oullette 6-2, 6-2, to give Pitt-Bradford the shutout victory.
Junior Michael Fitzpatrick competed in an exhibition game that served as the seventh overall singles game played. Fitzpatrick defeated the Mounties’ John Oullette 6-1, 6-0.
“The big part of our success today was our ability to neutralize serves,” said UPB coach Susan Schenfield. “We consistently placed replies.”
