STREET SIGNS: We must have started something last week when a reader asked us to get a definitive ruling on the spelling of Tibbits Avenue, which carried the spelling “Tibbets” on its sign and was also known as “Tibbitts” by none other than the U.S. Postal Service.
City Clerk John Peterson’s research found the original 1884 ordinance designating the name Tibbits Avenue, and John said he would direct the public works department to order up a corrected sign.
It might be a good idea to hold up on that order, especially if the sign company gives a volume discount.
A sharp-eyed reader sent us this photo on Friday, displaying a missing “E” in the spelling of Rochester.
“I never said our people who made the signs were good spellers,” John said Friday. He said he would add Rochester Street to the new-sign order.
We have to admit that we have more than the occasional lapse when it comes to proper spelling, so we generally don’t make light of anyone else’s miscues.
And as far as oops street signs go, Bradford isn’t alone.
We couldn’t pass on one pointed out by Jim Miller of Rixford. Jim takes South Kendall Avenue to work every day. On his way into work in the morning, he passes Prossor Lane just outside the city limits in Foster Township.
On his way home, he passes Prosser Lane.
Same street, same sign, different spelling on each side.
Note to Foster Township: We think we know where you can get a discount on street signs.
