Two Bradford residents are in jail after an alleged robbery and kidnapping at the Crosby Mini Mart at 573 South Avenue in Bradford Township early Tuesday.
Robert John Hannon Sr., 39, and Alice Marie Hannon, 34, both of 827 Bolivar Drive, were arraigned Tuesday before District Judge Bill Todd on charges of conspiracy to commit robbery, a felony; robbery of a motor vehicle and kidnap to facilitate a felony, both first-degree felonies; theft by unlawful taking, a third-degree felony; and terroristic threats, a first-degree misdemeanor, court records stated.
The charges stem from allegations that Alice Hannon dropped off her husband, Robert Hannon, at the store a little after midnight, and Robert Hannon forced an employee to allow him into the store to take money from the safe. Robert Hannon then allegedly drove the employee to a wooded area in her own car and left her there.
Bradford Township Police Chief Robb Shipman said a mini mart employee who was kidnapped during the incident was not injured. “(Robert Hannon) was actually relatively cordial towards her.” He said Hannon did not use any weapons in the incident.
Shipman also noted that he has no reason to believe the incident is related to a recent robbery in Eldred Borough, where an unknown person demanded prescription medications at the Buchanan Brothers Pharmacy. No arrest has been made in the Eldred incident.
In the Crosby Mart robbery, court records indicate that Hannon, who was wearing a camouflage mask, blue jeans, a long-sleeved blue shirt and heavy gloves, approached cashier Jamie Cabisca as she was locking the door of the building. He told her to unlock the door and disable the alarm, then forced her back into the store, court records said.
Robert Hannon asked Cabisca if she knew how to open the safe, but she didn’t, so he opened the safe himself and took money out of it, court records stated.
Shipman said Robert Hannon was an assistant manager at the Crosby Mart about two years ago.
According to court records, after he took money, Robert Hannon had Cabisca put the code in the alarm system, shut off the lights and get into the passenger side of her vehicle. Hannon got into the driver’s side, “told the victim to be quiet and keep her head down low or things would get worse for her,” then drove to the entrance of Allegany State Park. He made her hand over her cell phone and forced her out of the car.
Cabisca started to walk back but was able to flag down a vehicle and get a ride to the Bradford Township Police Station, court records said. Police recovered her vehicle on Summer Street in Bradford.
When Robert Hannon returned to his home around 2:30 a.m., he allegedly showed Alice Hannon what he said was about $3,000 and put it in a dresser drawer. Court records stated that he took $3,754.85 from the store.
Both Hannons indicated to police they were having “serious money issues.”
According to Shipman, when police were trying to identify the alleged robber, they were able to narrow the search down based the fact the suspect was “a thin-built man who had knowledge of the store.” The suspect knew the layout of the store and knew where the safe and alarm box were located.
Officers viewed a surveillance tape from the store during the investigation, court records indicated.
Police also learned Hannon had called off for his shift that night at Georgia Pacific, he said.
Police contacted Children and Youth Services and family members of the Hannons to make arrangements for their children, and Shipman believes Robert Hannon’s parents may have helped convince him to turn himself in.
Shipman noted that police officers worked around the clock investigating the case, some working as long as 30 hours. They were “diligent and got it done,” he said.
Having the suspects in custody has helped “put everybody at ease,” as other local mini marts were on “high alert” wondering if they would be victims, too.
Foster Township and Bradford City police departments also provided assistance, and bloodhound handler Rob Johnson of Port Allegany helped search the Hannons’ home.
Shipman said they obtained a search warrant to inspect the Hannons’ home, where police recovered what they believe is some of the money from the robbery. He noted that no weapons or drugs were found.
The Hannons are in McKean County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail each. They are both scheduled to appear in Central Court on Sept. 26.
