WAR DEAD: Forrest Sherman was a traveling salesman passing through Smethport when he got caught up in the patriotic fervor near the start of the Civil War.
He was 33 years old when he enrolled in Co. I, 13th Reserve, 42nd Pa. Vol. Infantry, 1st Rifles, on May 3, 1861. He was mustered in at Harrisburg on May 30, 1861, as a private.
