ALREADY GONE: Juanita in Smethport tells us Wednesday that her male hummingbirds have already departed for the winter leaving the females behind, fighting as usual around the feeder. A friend in Willow Creek who has dozens of hummingbirds over the summer reported, too, that the males had taken their leave on Sunday. Here’s hoping that these tiny powerhouses don’t have to battle Hurricane Isaac on their long journey south.
