BEAR LIFT?: An intriguing question from a Memorial Day
camper:
Bobbie Rochow of Jamestown writes, “While camping in the woods
at Lantz Corners/Mount Jewett Saturday morning or afternoon, we saw
something being lifted up and out by a helicopter on a cable. It
had a red harness on it, and what appeared to be four legs hanging
out. Was this a bear, possibly being relocated?”
We call on our readers in that vicinity who must have some idea
about this apparent “bear lift.”
ELIOT NESS: Ray Baruffalo of Lexington, Ky., also poses a
question for readers, “Seeing that note about Eliot Ness in
Friday’s Round the Square reminded me of something. There used to
be a restaurant on U.S. 219 between Johnsonburg and Wilcox called
the Weis Restaurant. The building is still there, I believe, but
has been converted into a residence. At any rate, long ago I was
told that Eliot Ness had a heart attack and died there having
dinner. Any of your readers know anything about this?”
EARLY BUGS: Roscoe writes us: “I am responding to Skip
Riekofsky’s sighting of the fireflies last Sunday. I, too, in
Bradford witnessed them high in the pine trees in my back yard that
same evening and since have noticed them lower the past week in the
back woods bushes. Early, I agree.”
BR-R-ADFORD: We conclude Wade Confer’s “bad weather”
calendar:
“June 12, 1979, brought a low reading of 30 degrees, repeated a
year later on that date.
“Bradford again became the coldest spot in the nation on June
13, 1979, when thermometer registered 32 degrees. On June 15, 1985,
the temperatures fell to 35 degrees.
“It was back to the coldest spot in the nation on June 18, 1986,
when the mercury read 34 degrees. On June 19, 1986, the reading was
37 degrees. On June 21, 1988, Bradford’s low was 37 degrees, and on
June 24, 1988, only 36 degrees. Temps fell to 29 degrees on June
25, 1979, and 30 degrees a day later, making Bradford the coldest
spot in the nation. On June 28, 1988, the mercury fell to 35
degrees.
“On July 4, 1986, the temperature fell to 32 degrees; on July 5,
1970, the low was 35 degrees; again only 35 degrees on July 6,
1979; and on July 6, 1983, only 34 degrees.”
