WORM ALERT: There’s some new kind of “worm” eating up the spruce
trees, we’ve been told.

Clyde Johnson of Port Allegany reported Monday that he observed
quite a few spruce trees in his neck of the woods that have turned
brown. On the needles are “teeny” worms of some sort, that will
“stand right up,” he says. Apparently, the worms like only certain
of the spruces and leave others untouched.

The worms are about a half-inch long, at most, and actually
devour the needles. Ouch!

TUCKER CLUB: In the 1950s and early 1960s there was a hot rod
club in Bradford called the “Tuckers.”

That’s the word today from Phil Bauschard. He continues, “They
arrived at the name because they had the front half of Tucker 1018
which was stored in the garage of my father-in-law Ellsworth
Johnson (Cake Shop).

“One of the goals of the club was to try to restore it but since
there were only 50 made, parts were impossible to find. As a child,
my wife, Cheryl, remembers playing in the car, steering it and
watching the center headlight turn.

“During the mid ’60s, Mr. Johnson moved from his home on Oxford
Street to Oakwood Avenue and wanted the car removed from the
garage. I believe that Phil Mangus took the car to a field behind
Casey Cole Chevrolet and eventually down somewhere in southern
PA.”

Phil also attached some pictures of the Tucker Serial Number
Plate for No. 1018 , a Club membership card, with a card given out
when they helped someone on the road, and also a front license
plate used by club members.

“I also have a front plate that Jeff Johnson had on the front of
his 1958 Edsel convertible. Some of the members of the ‘Tuckers’
were Don Backer, president; Ron Backer, Jeff Johnson, Phil Mangus,
Lanny Mangus, Jack Blair, Skip Crawford. Maybe this will prompt
some other members to contact you.”

ON EMPORIUM: Dan Weber e-mails us about the discussion of
parking meters in Emporium: “I live in a larger city now, but I
still remember diagonal parking on 4th street. This would give
plenty of parking without wasting everyone’s time and money with
meters and tickets. It’s just a regressive tax on people.”
