KANE — By the end of the meet, announcers — and anyone in the
stands for that matter — still couldn’t pronounce the last name
“Sciremammano.”
They sure will be hearing a lot more of it.
Freshman Danielle Sciremammano, who has the most tongue-twisting
last name on DuBois Area High School’s roster, tripled to lead the
field and her team to a District 9 Class AAA team track and field
title at Kane High School on Wednesday.
DuBois scored 157.5 first-place points, Bradford placed second
with 79.5 points, Punxsutawney was third with 64 points, St. Marys
finished fourth with 50 points and Clearfield was fifth with
24.
Sciremammano won district titles in the 100-meter hurdles and
triple jump, while running a leg on the winning 1600-meter relay
team. She earned the most individual points among all the female
athletes —24 —to capture the Jim Manors award.
Anna Pfingstler also tripled, finishing second in the running
for the Manors award with 18 points.
Sciremammano’s sister Alyssa, a junior, doubled along with
teammates Catherine Sheffo and Jordan Ball to guide the Lady
Beavers to their third straight D-9 Class AAA crown.
“It was a good meet with many fine performances by athletes on
all the teams,” said Larry Stillman, BAHS head coach. “We are very
proud of the efforts of our kids. They gave everything they had in
all their events, but DuBois is a very good team. We are very happy
for them, but we also had many fine efforts today.”
In fact, the Lady Owls had four district winners and saw many
more athletes finish in the top 5 of their respective events.
Behind Nicole Teribery, Erin Frisina and Brittni Wiseman,
Bradford took three of the seven field events slated at
districts.
Frisina took the discus with a mark of 117’3”, nearly 14 feet
longer than the event’s second-place finisher.
“She won with her best throw ever,” Stillman said. “She has
dominated this event all year and came through again. She is only a
sophomore and has improved every week, and has a great future.”
Teribery cleared 9’3” in the pole vault for her victory, and
Wiseman leaped 16’ 7 1/2” in the long jump for her win.
“Brittni Wiseman had a very good jump. She has been with the
program from middle school on and has worked so hard for this
title. She never lost site of achieving this goal and overcame many
obstacles to win the title in her senior year,” Stillman said.
“Nicole won her specialty — the pole vault — for the second year
in a row. She has been consistent all year and really worked to
improve in all areas of this tough event.”
Emily Marshall, Bradford’s fourth titleholder, jumped to a
narrow lead just about 50 meters into the 300-meter hurdles and
didn’t slow her pace until crossing the finish line.
“It was her best-ever race with a time of 46.93,” Stillman said,
pointing out the sophomore’s accomplishment. “It was a great race
against a tough opponent, but Emily really did finish strong to
pull it out.”
Stillman, in addition, said he is sure the four district winners
(Teribery, Frisina, Wiseman, Marshall) will “represent our school
with pride at the state meet.”
The Bradford coach was just as proud of his other competitors in
the field.
“Our jumpers had a good districts. Tashia Carrow had her
best-ever long jump of 15’6” for third and placed fifth in the
triple jump. She improved all year,” Stillman said. “Francine
Augustine had her best-ever high jump of 4’9” for sixth and really
looked good. Our young pole vaulters — Amanda Franco and Mackenzie
O’Brien — jumped well and took fifth and sixth.
“In the throws, Shelby Runyan took third in the shot put.
Katherine Moyer had her best discus throw of 89’10” for sixth
place, along with Emily (Marshall) throwing 108 (feet) in the
javelin for third.”
With DuBois taking a sweep of the relays, Bradford settled for
second place in both the 400-and 1600-meter four-person events.
“We had very good times in each event,” Stillman said.
Also producing notable times for the Lady Owls were Kate
Visbisky and Hilary Digel.
“Kate had three very good races, placing third in the 100
(dash), fourth in the 400 (dash) and second in the 200 (dash). In
the hurdles,” Stillman said, “the girls ran well with Hilary
placing fifth in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the 300 (hurdles)
with a personal best. She really came on strong the second half of
the year.”
As for his distance team, Stillman explained they competed hard,
something they’ve been doing all year.
“In the 1600 (run) Myriah Wiseman placed fourth with her
personal best of 5:31.20, and Maddy Forbes took seventh with her
best time of 5:56. Kacy Huston took sixth in the 3200 (run) with a
solid effort. In the 800 (run), Liz Gardner ran a very good race to
take third,” said the Lady Owls coach.
Bradford’s girls’ track and field team opened its 2010 campaign
with a loss to D-9 champion DuBois. The Lady Owls then won four out
of five dual meets to finish 5-2, before competing in Wednesday’s
meet.
“Overall, we competed hard and improved all yearlong,” Stillman
said of his team. “I knew from the beginning that it would take
time for this team to develop, but to their credit they did. We
watched them come along all year and grow together as a team, and
we look forward to the future.”
Stillman passed along thanks to his assistants, Matt Teribery
and Ashley Fox. “Both were in their first year coaching and did a
great job with the kids in vaults and jumps.”
And, Stillman said he wanted to thank all the parents for their
support.
Lastly, the Bradford coach praised the boys’ team.
“I would like to thank boys’ coaches Tom Tessena, Mark Kelley
and Scott Mealy for all they did for the girls and congratulate the
boys on winning their 12th straight title. That is a heck of an
accomplishment.”
