GAS PAIN: Now that gas is inching up to the $3 mark in Bradford,
as usual in the run-up to Memorial Day, we’re beginning to feel
more pain at the pump.

Max Birtcil of Philadelphia offers this perspective: “It’s
almost the summer driving season and I recently completed my annual
Mothers Day trip to the Bradford area. Because the trip takes me
almost diagonally through the state, its always interesting to
compare gas prices and wonder why there is such a huge
difference.

This weekend’s gas prices for regular were:

Bradford, $2.99; Allegheny, $2.89; Emporium, $2.87; State
College area, $2.83 (cash); Harrisburg,  $2.79; Philadelphia,
$2.83; Camden, N.J., $2.67.

“Once again, Bradford is the winner!” Max tells us. “A couple
years ago, the Philadelphia Inquirer did an article on how gasoline
is priced. I never read the whole article, but I wish I had
now!”

HANE BOOK: Robert Hunsicker’s book, “Roger Hane: Art, Times and
Tragedy,” is a finalist in the Popular Culture category of the 2010
Independent Press Awards known as the “IPPYs.”

That’s the word today from Margie Holland of Bradford who noted,
“Thought readers may be interested in this since UPB was host to
Bob’s book signing and talk last year, and lots of Bradfordians
bought the book.”

The award will be presented later this month at Book Expo
America in New York. The book is about   slain Chronicles of Narnia
artist Roger Hane, a Bradford native.

BIRD REPORTS: Have your hummingbirds arrived yet? We had thought
they were earlier than normal  but a bird watcher we know keeps
track of their arrivals and this year’s on May 3 was actually a bit
later than past years.

Last year, first arrival date was April 27. In 2008, they made
their first touch-down on April 29. In 2007, it was May 1.

Incidentally, our bird watcher said there was a bunch of hummers
at her three feeders during our recent chilly  period. She’s pretty
sure they were wearing little fur coats and mittens as they tried
valiantly to sip the (frozen) juice.

ONE MORE: Linda Gilbert of Rew reports seeing a flicker in her
backyard, eating ants and other bugs in the grass. Have others
spotted this type of bird, she wonders.
