BIG MIRROR: Anne Ferro drops us an e-line: “I remember my dad,
Joe Ferro, taking us to see a HUGE mirror when he worked at Corning
Glass in Bradford. Was this mirror displayed in Bradford?”
The mirror was displayed in Bradford, from what we’ve read in
The Era, as it was being shipped by rail to British Columbia.
We’d love to talk to someone who knows more about this big
mirror.
GAS PAINS: Those gasoline prices in Alaska that made our $3 a
gallon pale in comparison weren’t quite so bad after all. Bad
enough, though.
Larry Fay of Anchorage sends this update from the Tundra Drums
newspaper:
“Turns out that huge price leap at the gas pump in McGrath
shouldn’t have been so huge after all.
“Early last week, the price of gas jumped in a single day from
$5.97 a gallon to $9.20 a gallon in the Kuskokwim River
village.
“The fuel distributor and sole vendor, Crowley Petroleum
Distribution in Alaska, partly blamed low river water that forced
the company to fly fuel into the village instead of barging it. The
higher shipping costs led to a big part of the price leap.
“But a ‘misunderstanding’ between Crowley and an air cargo
company caused the company to pay more for the fuel than it should
have, said Box Cox, vice president of sales for the company.
“That led to customers being overcharged 72 cents.
“On Wednesday, the company bumped the price down to $8.48, Cox
said.
“The firm will reimburse the 20 or so people who bought fuel at
the wrong price, he said.”
Quite a bargain at only $8.48, eh?
COMING UP: As Memorial Day approaches, we continue to get
letters and information about the poor condition of some of the
local cemeteries. This goes on every year and people visiting
graves for “decoration day” are rightly appalled at the disgraceful
condition of their loved ones’ final resting place.
We have written many stories on these deplorable conditions in
past years, but must admit the direct approach from some of these
people might serve them better. In other words, why not take your
complaint directly to the owners of these cemeteries?
One local teen had made a project out of providing upkeep at one
of the cemeteries, and that might be another avenue for people to
pursue.
