THE CHARM: Rest easy. It snowed for the third time on the
peepers Wednesday so spring can now officially begin.
GOOD IDEA: We pass along a suggestion for an improvement or two
at Sena-Kean Manor in Smethport.
“I can see where it might be more attractive here in the large
lawn outside my window on the side towards McKean County Jail where
maintenance goes with the snowblower — why not lay a 4-foot-wide
cement walk for people who live here to use?
“And perhaps a gazebo-type roofed area — pavilion, perhaps, with
seating in/under them for residents to enjoy in nice weather. With
a pavilion, perhaps a nice picnic table with moveable benches plus,
for those that can use them, some outdoor chairs and a cushioned
couch perhaps.
“Why not plant flowers around base of a flowering (crab apple?)
tree that the birds like — (perhaps a Boy or Girl Scout project?)
Maybe a ‘park bench’ of cement type, durable, or two, close to the
tree for people to enjoy the outside when they can, providing we
have a drier summer than the last two.”
Mary Foley sent along these suggestions “to see if any civic
groups might be interested in tackling my ideas and bringing them
to fruition. God bless, and keep on giving us all those informative
columns. I enjoy reading them.”
Thanks, Mary. Hope you get your wishes.
HEARTBREAKER: Jim Belardia of Bradford remembers that
“Heartbreak Theater” on radio station WESB. In fact, he recalls the
programs aired at 5:30 p.m. on Sundays and portrayed “stories of
human problems.”
“I always enjoyed them,” Jim said. Noting that radio was quite
different in those days, he remembered that his mother would
enjoying listening to cooking shows on the radio.
THE PHILLIES: We got a postcard in the mail from “a baseball
fan” concerning an item we carried about an old Bradford Phillies
Baseball Club sign: “Hopefully, that vestige of Bradford’s past
will find its way to either the Landmark Society, McKean County
Historical Society, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum, Smithsonian
or Baseball’s Hall of Fame collection.”
“Interesting, RTS ran an item (May 9, 2008) that a reader
remembered such an item in the McCrory building. Though the
historical minded would have worked to secure it then versus now
surfacing in someone’s pickup truck.”
