COMING SOON: The used book sale benefiting the Era’s Newspapers
In Education program is coming soon.

Sale dates are May 20, 21 and 22 at the former Salvation Army
Thrift Store on Main Street next to PNC Bank’s parking lot. Hours
are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. May 20 and 21; and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 22.

Our NIE Coordinator Jane Larson says she has thousands of books
to sell, thanks to the generosity of our readers.

Topics include fiction, non-fiction, religious, children’s,
westerns, travel, cookbooks, biographies, self-help, gardening and
more.  Jane says most books will be priced at 50 cents and one
dollar, with proceeds benefiting the Newspapers In Education
program here at The Era.

What is Newspapers In Education? Coordinated by the Newspaper
Association of America Foundation, NIE is a 50+ year-old program
which uses the daily newspaper in the classroom like a textbook in
grades K-12.

The primary focus is to improve reading, writing and critical
thinking skills. Curriculum materials that are grade and subject
specific are provided to assist teachers in coordinating the
newspaper with their lesson plans. Subjects cover a wide range
including language arts, history, science, math, life skills,
health, current events and more. Serials and special event series
are also part of the program.

Independent studies conducted by MORI Research in 2007 found
teachers who used NIE in the classroom had students who scored
between 15 to 20 percent higher in standardized testing in reading
and math. The goal is to strengthen instruction at all levels.

Sponsoring newspapers fund the majority of the cost of the
non-profit program.  Additional funds are provided through
donations from businesses, industries, civic groups and school
districts who believe NIE helps open young minds, increases
knowledge and builds global awareness.  The remainder comes from
fund raising projects like the used book sale.

Jane says there are plenty of books in hardcover and paperback
to please just about everyone’s taste!

GAS PAINS: Once again, Bradford is getting the short end of the
discrepancy stick when it comes to gasoline prices. Lester Stuck of
Duke Center phoned Monday to report gas prices over the weekend at
