PHILLIES SIGN: We peered into the back of John Place’s pickup
parked on Main Street to see an old sign, “Bradford Phillies
Baseball Club Inc.,” which apparently had been stored upstairs at
the former McCrory’s building on Main Street — the club’s one-time
office. He got the old sign from Office of Economic and Community
Development, owner of the building, which apparently was discarding
some old stuff. Pretty cool.

JACK HERMES: Bob Felmlee writes, “I would like to say how sad I
was to hear that Jack Hermes passed away. Mr. Hermes was a great
person. I had worked for Jack and his father John at the Kendall
stations on East Main Street and Main Street back in the ’60s.”

“Both Jack and John would do anything they could for anyone.
Jack did a lot of good for the city of Bradford when he served on
the City Council. Jack will be missed by all.”

KENDALL OIL: Jim Flynn in Erie writes about the legendary
Kendall Oil: “Many years ago, a lady pulled into a gas station in
Smethport to fill her car. She was headed to Mansfield, Pa. The
attendant filled her car and checked her oil. It was down a quart
and a half. The attendant said she should at least put in a quart.
She declined. She said she used Kendall, ‘The 2,000 Mile Oil’ and
only had a little over 1,000 miles since the last oil change. She
drove off into the morning sun rise.”

COLD COMFORT: We carried an item about a day in June in 1977 or
1978 when it was so cold people had to replace the flowers in the
cemeteries. We carried a response from a skeptical reader about the
unseasonably cold weather, but now “Anonymous” writes us, “Must
have been June 4 or June 8, 1977. The predawn low at Mount Alton,
with clear skies, both days was 28. The daytime highs ended up
being almost 70 and in the mid 50s, respectively.”

Our anonymous chum adds, “If only someone in the mass
communication industry could learn how to use the Internet.”

Could he mean us? Naw!

Hey, we can use the Internet but don’t always have the patience
or time to conduct what sometimes is a frustrating and tedious
search of all those 149,258 sites in question.
