THAT SONG: “I have been waiting for someone else to give you
this answer, but I can’t stand the suspense anymore so I’m jumping
in with my 2 cents!”
So says Susan Macfarlane of Derrick City who adds, “I used to
listen to ‘Dream Dust’ when I was in 6th or 7th grade because I
received my first transistor radio for Christmas. It had one
earphone that you plugged into the side and could listen without
anyone else hearing the music.”
“Once in awhile the Dream Dust show would play a ‘hip’ tune but
it was usually very mellow in keeping with the time of night. I
can’t recall any of those specifically but do recall ‘that’ song,
‘I’ll See You in My Dreams’!
“The music was written by Isham Jones and the lyrics are by Gus
Kahn:
“‘I’ll see you in my dreams,
Hold you in my dreams.
Someone took you right out of my arms,
Still I feel the thrill of your charms.
Lips that once were mine,
Tender eyes that shine.
They will light my way tonight,
I’ll see you in my dreams.’
“The version WESB played was not by a single artist but by a
group with an orchestra. It was very beautiful and peaceful and a
nice way to fall asleep.”
RADIO TIME: We also got this follow-up note from Rusty Koelbel
of Reisterstown, Md., “I was kindly corrected by my sister from
Pittsburgh on the Masterpiece Theater show on WESB. She said it was
actually called ‘Heartbeat’ Theater and it was put on by the
Salvation Army. Does anyone else remember this show?”
Jerry Kleisath also dropped us a line, “When I was in 4-H during
the ’50s we used to go over to WESB and report on some of our
activities on the radio. Later, as 4-H agent in Elk County I used
to give reports on the Ridgway station on Saturday mornings.”
He also had a comment on our story on the tradition of weaving
palms given out on Palm Sunday: “In regards to weaving the palms
into designs, we did that until now you only get a small single
palm and can’t weave them anymore.”
Must be the economic problems are even hitting the Catholic
church if they’ve begun scrimping on palms in some parts of the
country. Imagine!
